Matt Shaw of the Chicago Cubs announced that he will begin participating in games in the coming days without any hesitation, restrictions, or limitations. After recovering from an oblique injury earlier this month, Shaw is ready to return to action as he aims for a spot on the Opening Day roster.
A former first-round pick out of Maryland, Shaw has spent the last two seasons in the minors, posting a .303 batting average, 29 home runs (21 of them in the past season), 99 RBIs (70 of those in 2024), and 46 stolen bases.
Shaw has been dominant in the minors, and the Cubs are excited to see how he has developed and what he can contribute to the team. After this brief setback, they’ll finally get to watch him play during spring training.

Shaw is competing for the starting third-base position, and his versatility in the field makes him a standout candidate. With experience at shortstop, third base, and second base, he is capable of filling any of those roles if needed.
As one of the Cubs’ top prospects, Shaw has proven he is ready for a shot at the major leagues. Now fully recovered and without restrictions, he will be the focus as the Cubs assess whether he’s ready to make an impact at the big-league level. The Cubs will play against the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, so it will be exciting to see when and where Shaw makes his debut.
