The Detroit Lions had a standout season, finishing at the top of the NFC, and despite several coaching changes in the offseason, they remain a strong contender for the upcoming season. With the core of their roster intact, the Lions are well-positioned to repeat their success and make a serious run for the big game next year.
However, there’s a possibility the Lions may head into the 2025 season without one of their veteran players. Wide receiver Allen Robinson, who joined the Lions last season, is reportedly considering retirement and contemplating a career change.
Retirement Consideration for NFL Veteran
The Lions’ wide receiver corps includes stars like Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, who played crucial roles in their 15-2 regular season record. However, Robinson, 31, who joined the Lions’ practice squad in August and was promoted to the active roster in September, is now weighing his future in the NFL. Robinson, who hasn’t seen much playing time recently, is reflecting on his next steps, with family playing a significant role in his decision.
“For me, it’s now just taking time to evaluate what next year looks like for me in general,” Robinson told Dave Birkett of The Detroit Free Press. “That’s kind of where I’m at with it. So, I’m taking some time to make this decision with my family.”
Robinson, who started his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars after being selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, has played for several teams, including the Chicago Bears, Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, and Lions. He made the Pro Bowl in 2015 and earned numerous accolades during his career. Originally from the Detroit area, Robinson graduated from St. Mary’s Preparatory in Orchard Lake Village.
Family Considerations in Robinson’s Decision
As he contemplates his future, Robinson emphasized the importance of family in his decision-making process.
“For me, it’s more so about figuring out what my future in this game and in this league looks like,” he said. “Playing, finishing Season 11, having a family, figuring out different things with them, moving around and stuff like that.”
Robinson, who will become an unrestricted free agent when the 2025 league year opens on March 12, is taking time to reflect on his next steps, with his family being a significant part of the conversation.
In addition to Robinson’s uncertain future, cornerback Carlton Davis, who started 13 games for the Lions during the 2024 season before a season-ending jaw injury in Week 15, is also set to become a free agent. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to be one of the teams interested in signing Davis.
