Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach Mike Young has finalized his 2024-25 roster with another addition, concluding a period of flux marked by player transfers and new arrivals from both the transfer portal and high school commitments.
Young has bolstered the team’s athleticism and added some sharpshooters who seamlessly align with the offensive style favored by the Hokies. Bringing in Hysier Miller from Temple and four-star recruit Ben Hammond from the Virginia Class of 2024 strengthens the team’s ball-handling capabilities. While Young has various options to round out the roster, securing a specific position would greatly benefit the Hokies.
Despite the presence of several wings and guards on Virginia Tech’s roster, the addition of another big man would be advantageous. Last season, Lynn Kidd showed promise but ultimately decided to enter the transfer portal with one year of eligibility left, ultimately committing to Miami in the ACC. The arrivals of Ben Burnham from the College of Charleston and Jaden Schutt from Duke promise to provide floor spacing, complemented by Miller, Rodney Brown from California, and Hammond, who are anticipated to make significant contributions.
Additionally, Tobi Lawal from VCU brings athleticism to the forward position and could emerge as one of the Hokies’ top rebounders.Virginia Tech thrived last season when they effectively utilized their big men and played through them, although this consistency wasn’t achieved every game. Maximizing production from the interior will be pivotal given the team’s composition for the upcoming season. If Young can secure another big man through the final available scholarship, the roster would likely feel complete.
