Former Phillies outfielder surprisingly joins Braves as minor league coach
Roman Quinn’s addition to the Braves’ minor league coaching staff certainly comes as a surprise, especially considering his lack of connection to the Braves during his playing career. Quinn, who was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the second round of the 2011 MLB Draft, had a solid but injury-riddled career in the majors.
Known for his speed and defensive ability, Quinn was a valuable depth piece for the Phillies during their rebuild, splitting time in center field and providing a pinch-running threat. Despite his impressive speed, he was limited by injuries, and his tenure with the Phillies ultimately ended in 2022 after a series of up-and-down seasons.
Over his six seasons in Philadelphia, Quinn appeared in 201 games, hitting eight home runs, driving in 41 RBIs, and stealing 43 bases in 54 attempts. After being designated for assignment by the Phillies, Quinn had brief stints with the Tampa Bay Rays and then moved between several minor league affiliates with other organizations, including the Kansas City Royals, Cleveland Guardians, Milwaukee Brewers, and Colorado Rockies. He officially retired from playing in 2023 at the age of 30.

Now, two years later, Quinn is back in the game, not as a player but as a coach. It’s an interesting and unexpected career shift for Quinn, who will be working with the Florida Complex League Braves. Despite his lack of prior connection to Atlanta, his deep understanding of the game—particularly his knowledge of speed, defense, and baserunning—could be an asset to developing young talent in the Braves’ system.
It’s also worth noting that this isn’t Quinn’s first experience in a coaching role, as he recently led his daughter’s softball team to a state championship, showcasing his leadership abilities outside of professional baseball. This new coaching role offers Quinn an opportunity to stay involved in the sport and transition into a new chapter of his baseball journey. Given his background and experience, Quinn could prove to be a valuable mentor for the next generation of Braves prospects.
