The Oregon team is back in the NCAA Championships after missing out in 2023, fueled by a tough senior leader, not only spoke with conviction, but also backed it up with action. The Oregon team begins their journey in the NCAA Championship tournament this Friday. Despite the team being largely powered by freshmen throughout the season, it was a senior, theĀ star player who played a pivotal role in propelling them towards the championship. When the UO faced the critical juncture of advancing out of the Auburn Regional last week, the phenomena delivered an inspiring speech to the team before the final round, then went on to score a remarkable 2-under 70, aiding Oregon in achieving the best round of the week among all teams in the regional.
This achievement propelled Chen and her team to the NCAA Championships, commencing with three rounds of stroke play on Friday at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. The top teams from this stage will progress to a final round of stroke play on Monday, followed by match-play quarterfinals on Tuesday morning.
Originally from Taiwan and now in her fifth season with the Ducks, Chen has become a vocal leader for the team, showcasing her and she have really showed commitment to the team andĀ growth over the years. With 345 career birdies, she has secured her place in UO history. Chen’s journey epitomizes the essence of college sports, where athletes not only excel in their sport but also mature into remarkable individuals.
Reflecting on past experiences, Chen was part of the UO women’s team that made it to the national finals two years ago. In contrast, they fell short of reaching the NCAA Championships in 2023. However, fueled by a determination for redemption, this season has been dubbed the “revenge tour,” with the team striving to reclaim their position at the top. Chen drew inspiration from the Oregon softball team’s journey, understanding that setbacks can pave the way for redemption.
Chen’s influence extends beyond her performance on the course; she embodies the team spirit, emphasizing the importance of playing for each other rather than just as individuals. Drawing from her own experiences, she encourages her teammates to remain resilient and focused, especially during challenging moments.
As the NCAA Championships approach, Chen’s leadership and experience serve as invaluable assets for her younger teammates. Alongside fellow senior Minori Nagano and three freshmen, Chen believes in the potential of her team and their readiness for the upcoming challenges. Should the freshmen seek guidance or motivation, Chen stands ready to lead by example and offer words of encouragement.
