commitment: One of their key star player has Departed to Virginia Tech..

The Virginia Tech Hokies received an unexpected boost last Saturday when Kaleb Spencer, a linebacker/defensive back from Miami, announced his commitment to the team after entering the NCAA transfer portal less than a month ago.

With just one full scholarship available, the Hokies chose Spencer, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound Virginia native. Despite being a true freshman, Spencer saw action in 11 games for the Hurricanes last season, earning credit for one tackle.

Originally from Gloucester, Virginia, Spencer attended Life Christian Academy in Colonial Heights and was rated as a high three-star recruit in the 2023 class. According to 247Sports, he ranked 13th overall in Virginia and 673rd overall nationally.

While primarily listed as a linebacker, Spencer is versatile and can also play safety, making him a potential fit for the STAR role in head coach Brent Pry’s defensive scheme. His addition, along with newcomers Khurtiss Perry (defensive lineman from Alabama) and Collin Schlee (quarterback from UCLA) through the spring transfer portal, adds to the talent pool. The Hokies previously welcomed four players in December.

Though his role for the upcoming 2024 season is uncertain, Pry’s strategy of recruiting local talent like Spencer not only brings hometown players back but also enhances the team’s overall skill level. Welcome aboard, Kaleb!
