ATLANTA – With just two weeks until Opening Day, the Atlanta Braves are in an interesting spot. They remain one of the National League’s strongest contenders, but a few roster holes still need to be addressed. While their core lineup is largely set, injuries and potential late free-agent signings could bring changes before March 27.
From adding depth at catcher to securing a veteran bat for extra insurance alongside Matt Olson and the team’s other power hitters, the Braves have key decisions ahead. Will they stand pat with their current roster, or take advantage of the surprisingly deep free-agent market?
The Braves faced a setback in spring training when starting catcher Sean Murphy sustained a cracked rib, leaving them short on depth behind the plate. James McCann remains one of the top available options to fill the gap.
At 34, McCann put together a solid 2024 season with the Orioles, posting a .233 average and a .667 OPS—modest numbers but reliable for a backup catcher. Defensively, he remains a valuable asset, and with Murphy sidelined long-term, signing him could be a sensible move.
The Braves reportedly pursued Yasmani Grandal, but the former All-Star declined their offer. That leaves McCann as the top available option unless Atlanta turns to an internal replacement. With Murphy’s injury creating an urgent need, McCann is a strong candidate to sign with the Braves and remain for the entire season.
