Breaking: Yankees Land $335 Million 2 Major Weapon in Blockbuster Trade

The New York Yankees have several roster needs, some longstanding and others emerging after Gerrit Cole’s injury. While adding a starting pitcher is a priority for their World Series aspirations, they also need infield help.

One team that could address both issues is the St. Louis Cardinals, who have Sonny Gray and Nolan Arenado under contracts totaling $335 million—a significant financial hurdle for the Yankees.

Despite the cost, Zach Pressnell of FanSided suggested a trade in which New York acquires both players. While acknowledging the financial challenges, he argued that the deal could work if the Yankees are willing to absorb the salaries.

According to Zach Pressnell, the Yankees have been linked to third baseman Nolan Arenado, but two major obstacles stand in the way of a deal. First, GM Brian Cashman appears reluctant to take on a significant portion of Arenado’s contract. Second, Arenado has reportedly not waived his no-trade clause to facilitate a move to New York.

The Yankees could also consider bringing back starting pitcher Sonny Gray as a replacement for Gerrit Cole. Gray has been outstanding in recent seasons and would add stability to a rotation full of uncertainty.

Pressnell noted that while acquiring both stars would be a major financial commitment, it could reduce the prospect cost for New York. In this scenario, the Yankees might keep most of their top prospects while parting with only a few lower-level players.

Arenado Could Be the Issue

At this stage in his career, Arenado has shown signs of decline, and the Yankees are wary of acquiring a player who may be past his prime. However, their options at third base are limited, making him one of the few realistic trade targets.

Arenado also holds a full no-trade clause, which could complicate any potential deal. As Jorge Castillo of ESPN pointed out, the Cardinals would likely need to cover part of his salary to make a trade feasible. A deal could happen in 2025, as the Cardinals had previously agreed to send Arenado to the Houston Astros in December, only for him to exercise his no-trade rights and block the move.

“Perhaps a trade could involve the Yankees, especially after they signed Arenado’s close friend and former Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt in December. However, for now, the Yankees appear to be sticking with their current roster,” Castillo wrote.

Arenado’s no-trade clause remains a key hurdle, as he ultimately has control over where he lands.

Is Gray Worth Trading For?

Gray has transformed as a pitcher since leaving the Yankees. While he may not be on Gerrit Cole’s level, finding a replacement of Cole’s caliber is a near-impossible task.

That said, Gray remains an ace-caliber arm. If he’s open to returning to New York despite his previous struggles with the team, the move could be a logical fit for both sides.

However, his first stint in New York was far from smooth, which raises some concerns about how a reunion would play out.
