Breaking: Braves Lands Home Another Hard-nosed All-Star In a Blockbuster Deal With

The Atlanta Braves have bolstered their catching depth by signing veteran James McCann to a minor league contract, according to multiple reports.  This move comes as starting catcher Sean Murphy is expected to miss the beginning of the regular season due to a cracked left rib.

With Murphy sidelined, the Braves’ catching responsibilities will likely fall to 23-year-old prospect Drake Baldwin, who has impressed in Spring Training. Chadwick Tromp is also a candidate to serve as the backup catcher.  The addition of McCann provides veteran experience and depth to the position during this period.

McCann, 34, brings over a decade of MLB experience to Atlanta. He began his career with the Detroit Tigers, followed by stints with the Chicago White Sox, New York Mets, and Baltimore Orioles. In 2019, he earned an All-Star selection while with the White Sox, hitting 18 home runs and recording 60 RBIs.

Over his career, McCann has accumulated more than 3,000 at-bats, posting a .241 batting average, 92 home runs, and 373 RBIs. In the 2024 season with the Orioles, he appeared in 65 games, hitting eight home runs and driving in 31 RBIs with a .234/.279/.388 slash line.

The Braves’ decision to release veteran catcher Curt Casali and reassign Sandy León to minor league camp earlier this week cleared the way for McCann’s signing.  This strategic move underscores Atlanta’s commitment to ensuring a seamless transition behind the plate during Murphy’s absence.

McCann will initially report to extended Spring Training to prepare for the upcoming season. Once ready, he is expected to join Triple-A Gwinnett, providing depth and mentorship to the Braves’ catching prospects.

This signing also adds an intriguing dynamic to the Braves’ rivalry with the New York Mets, McCann’s former team. After a challenging tenure in New York, McCann now seeks to rejuvenate his career within the Braves’ organization, aiming to contribute to their pursuit of another World Series title.

As the Braves navigate the early part of the season without Murphy, the experience and versatility McCann brings will be invaluable. His leadership and familiarity with the rigors of major league play position him as a key asset in Atlanta’s quest for success in the National League East.
