Dusty May commenced his tenure by securing commitments from eight players who will join the Michigan team next season. Now, May and his team are shifting their focus to high school prospects in the classes of 2025 and 2026.
One of their targets is Darryn Peterson, a five-star guard from the class of 2025. Peterson recently received an offer and a call from May. Despite being a priority for the previous coaching staff, Peterson has been re-offered by the new Wolverines’ staff.
Standing at 6-foot-5, Peterson is currently the top-ranked shooting guard in the country but is transitioning to the point guard position as he eyes the next level of play.
I spoke with Peterson’s father, Darryl, from The Michigan Insider, to discuss Peterson’s game and recruitment. Peterson had previously narrowed down his choices to eight schools but reopened his recruitment due to coaching changes at some of his final options. May wasted no time in reaching out to Peterson to maintain Michigan’s position in his recruitment.
“Michigan called us to reintroduce themselves,” Peterson said. “We were initially drawn to Juwan, but now with the new staff, it’s about rebuilding that connection. We’ve observed Dusty for some time, and we see that his coaching style aligns with Darryn’s strengths. Michigan wants him to play as a point guard.”
Despite being from Ohio and having affiliations with Adidas, the Peterson family isn’t swayed by regional or brand loyalties. Their priority is finding the best fit for Darryn’s development as a player and person, regardless of school or sponsorship.
“We’re not concerned about being an ‘Adidas school’,” Peterson emphasized. “We’re focused on finding the right fit where Darryn can develop as a point guard and succeed.”
Numerous schools, including some from Peterson’s initial top eight, have shown interest. Peterson plans to visit multiple campuses, including Michigan, again soon.
May has left a strong impression on the Peterson family, aligning with their vision of finding a coach who maximizes Darryn’s potential.
“May’s coaching style suits Darryn,” Peterson noted. “We want a coach who trusts him and puts him in the right positions to succeed.”
While NIL opportunities are present, the Peterson family prioritizes Darryn’s development and fit within a program over financial considerations.
“NIL is not our primary focus,” Peterson clarified. “We prioritize Darryn’s development and fit over financial gains.”
